Yuval Shay-El's "ואהבתם את הגר" (And You Are to Love Those Who Are Foreigners) was composed in 2016 for vocalist Etty BenZaken, Modalius Ensemble & conductor Eitan Steinberg, as part of their project "Liberty, Otherness, Responsibility". The composition is inspired by Modalius’ unique instrumentation and includes musical influences from East and West, from the Renaissance to our time. The text includes phrases from the holy scripts of the three monotheistic religions, which emphasize respect for the other as a universal moral law. The fact that the phrases are mixed and are all sung in a single language blurs the different sources.
