Uri Netanel's "African Story" was composed in 2016 for vocalist Etty BenZaken, Modalius Ensemble & conductor Eitan Steinberg as part of their project "Liberty, Otherness, Responsibility". Inspired by African music, this composition includes variations on a folk song from the Acoli tribe in northern Uganda. The text tells a story about the way a melody acts as one’s personal song: The melody is given to the person already in his mother’s womb and remains as his song throughout his life. In times of crisis, the tribe’s people gather and sing it for him.
