Shiri Riseman's "Bauchi" was composed in 2016 for vocalist Etty BenZaken, Modalius Ensemble & conductor Eitan Steinberg as part of their project "Liberty, Otherness, Responsibility". The piece is based on a short chapter from Calvino's "Invisible Cities,” where he describes the residents of city of Bauchi: Their houses do not touch the earth and, for unknown reasons, the people never go down to the earth – a fact that raises questions regarding their freedom and their responsibility toward the earth. The music work is an abstract interpretation of this story. Its musical building blocks are two Indian ragas that are present in the piece, sometimes alternately and sometimes simultaneously.

אחרי צעדה של שבעה ימים בסבך-השיחים, בו ההולך אל עבר בָּאוּצִ'י אינו יכול לראות את העיר – והנה הוא מגיע. הקבִּים הדקיקים המזדקפים מן הקרקע במרחק רב זה מזה ואובדים שם למעלה בין העננים, הם התומכים בעיר. עולים אל עיר זו בעזרת סולמות. התושבים מראים את פניהם על פני האדמה רק לעיתים נדירות: היות ושם למעלה יש להם את כל מה שהם זקוקים לו, הם מעדיפים שלא לרדת. שום חלק מן העיר אינו נוגע בקרקע, לבד מן הגפיים הארוכים הללו, הדומים לרגליה של אנפה, עליהם העיר עצמה נשענת, ולבד מאיזה צל מנוקב וזוויתני שבימים שטופי-שמש מצטייר על גבי העלווה. אודות תושביה של בָּאוּצִ'י ניתן לשער שלוש השערות: שהם שונאים את האדמה; שהם מכבדים אותה עד כדי כך שהם נמנעים מכל מגע איתה; שהם אוהבים אותה כפי שהייתה בטרם בואם אליה, ובעזרת משקפות וטלסקופים המכוונים כלפי מטה, אין הם נלאים מלסקור אותה וכל אשר בה, כל עלה ועלה, כל נמלה ונמלה, וכך, כמוקסמים, הם מתבוננים בהיעדרותם-הם מעל פני-האדמה
