Sara Shoham's "Identity Issues" was composed in 2016 for vocalist Etty BenZaken, Modalius Ensemble & conductor Eitan Steinberg as part of their project "Liberty, Otherness, Responsibility". The text describes a singing bird. Someone else uses the bird’s voice; someone else creates her songs; someone else feels at home inside her throat. The bird – a symbol of freedom – is described as a caged bird; not in a physical cage, but in a prison of the mind, away from freedom of thought and expression. The composition blends musical influences from East and West, and in the last part of the piece, these different influences reconcile and merge to create one musical world.
