Ido Akov's "The Leopard Skin" was composed in 2016 for vocalist Etty BenZaken, Modalius Ensemble & conductor Eitan Steinberg as part of their project "Liberty, Otherness, Responsibility". The piece uses the opening stanzas of the well-known epic by Shota Rustaveli – the Georgian poet who lived his last years in exile in Jerusalem. His monumental work “The Leopard Skin” was translated into Hebrew only in the mid-twentieth century, by the Jewish-Russian poet Boris Gaponov. For composer Ido Akov, these two individuals represent the Otherness expressed in the cultural diversity of Israel, but also our Responsibility to preserve it.
