Hagar Kadima's "Parable" was composed in 2016 for vocalist Etty BenZaken, Modalius Ensemble & conductor Eitan Steinberg, as part of their project "Liberty, Otherness, Responsibility". It is inspired by the project's theme and by the performers interest in ethnic music. The text is Szymborska’s allegory about a bottled call for help found by fishermen. No time or location is mentioned, just a cry: "Help me, I am here!" One fisherman says it is probably too late, another notes that the location is unknown. A third fisherman says it is not too late or too far: The island Here is everywhere. The questions raised by this allegory – Aren’t we all inherently connected? Aren’t we responsible for each other? – are echoed by a short quotation of the traditional melody of the Jewish-Yemenite song "When Generous Doors are Locked."
